Leaking & Dripping
Tap Repairs

A dripping tap is rarely just annoying — a steady drip wastes thousands of litres a year and usually means a worn washer, cartridge or seat that will only get worse. We repair or replace it properly, and we clean up after ourselves.

What We Repair & Replace

Dripping Taps

Worn washers, tap heads, cartridges and seats replaced so the drip stops for good rather than for a fortnight.

Mixer Taps

Single-lever and thermostatic mixers repaired or replaced, including cartridge failures and temperature drift.

Kitchen, Bathroom & Outdoor

Kitchen sinks, basins, baths, laundry tubs and outside garden taps — including frost-damaged outdoor taps.

Shower Fittings & Pumps

Leaking shower mixers, poor flow and failing shower pumps diagnosed and sorted.

What a Tidy Repair Looks Like

Most basin and tap leaks end up here — at the trap and tailpiece under the vanity, where a perished seal or a cracked waste has been dripping into the cabinet long before anything showed on the floor. We replace the failed section rather than packing it with silicone, then run and check it before we pack up.

Leaking Taps — Your Questions Answered

How much water does a dripping tap waste?

A tap dripping once a second wastes in the order of 10,000 litres a year — enough to show up on a metered water bill and more than enough to stain a basin. A steadier drip or a leaking outdoor tap wastes considerably more. It is almost always a cheap fix relative to what it costs to ignore.

Why is my tap still dripping after I replaced the washer?

If a new washer has not stopped the drip, the valve seat it presses against is usually worn or pitted, so the washer cannot seal. That needs re-seating or a replacement tap body. On mixer taps there is no washer at all — a drip normally means the ceramic cartridge has failed and needs replacing.

Can you repair a mixer tap or does it need replacing?

Most mixer taps can be repaired by replacing the ceramic cartridge, which is far cheaper than a new tap. Where the tap body is corroded, the brand is obsolete or parts are no longer available, replacement is the sensible option. We will tell you which situation you are in before we start.

My outdoor tap is leaking after a frost — what happened?

Christchurch frosts commonly split the internal mechanism or the pipe just behind an unprotected outdoor tap. The leak often only appears when the tap is turned on and the ice thaws. Repairs are straightforward, and fitting a frost cover or an insulated jacket before the next winter usually prevents a repeat.

Is a leaking tap worth calling a plumber for?

Yes — it is a small, quick job that stops a growing problem. A tap repair gets the same licensed tradesperson and the same care as any other job. Where it makes sense, we will sort several small jobs in one visit so you get full value from the one-hour minimum.
